Charles's grandfather started a roofing company in Brooklyn after the war. His father carried it on, and eventually moved the family to Arizona to keep the trade going under a hotter sun. Twenty-plus years later, Charles is still on the roof.

Alex is a third-generation Arizonan and has been working in home improvement since the 1990s. He's Charles's brother-in-law. The two of them run McMillan & Johnston together — one Maricopa, one Mohave, both showing up on the same jobs.
